News Short - Flax Gallery Politically Stuns
There is so much going on in St. Louis right now—weddings, dinner dates, and Obama. One event that might’ve slipped past you is the opening of the Flax Gallery new exhibit “Sex, Politics, and You.” The Flax Gallery is the middle of Washington Avenue downtown and easily dismissive since there is now way you would know it was there if you didn’t know about it. This neat gallery takes several flights of stairs to get to but once you’ve reached the top, you are greeted by a very white space that’s well-lit and larger than you would think. The politically-themed show shows many of St. Louis’ emerging and established artist. The new collection is a little A.D.D. because of the various genres represented but there is something for everyone. One of the knockouts of the exhibit belong to Angela Kelly, a freelance photographer, who created photos concerning the state of race in America with a special attention to voting. Her black and white photos seem minimalistic compared to some of the large paintings, but their message reverberates in way that connects to the real citizens of this country and not political ideologues. Another artist well-represented is Sherilyn Kennedy. She’s a 2-D artist with a close eye for romantic architectural details. There’s also some stunning jewelry (and it’s affordable, wink-wink) by iram-inal designs. So go check it out—now. The exhibit runs until November 29th; you can get more information about the Flax Gallery at www.artdemensions.org.
